VANiSH operated as a satellite of Spike Island, during the arts centre's refurbishment. Like the building, a former tea-packing warehouse, the van was refurbished to accommodate and nurture a range of creative activities. In it's first phase, the van was fitted out as a mobile camera obscura and toured the immediate neighbourhood of Spike Island, exploring the shambling evolution of it's landscape and framing unlikely connections and uncomfortable spaces between our notions of public and private realms, perception and watchfulness, technology and craft. Subsequently the VANiSH programme has hosted new works by several artists including Damien Roache and Annabel Other.
